In the words of Vantrease Blair, “The Russell Home is home for children and adults with the mental capacity of children whose handicaps prevent their independent functioning in the community. The Russell Home provides around the clock specialized care, love in a home-like atmosphere which is so vital to their special needs.
The Russell Home also provides day-care on a regular or as needed basis as well as temporary respite care during vacations, emergency situations, or when a parent whose handicapped child lives at home just needs a break. This day-care is provided free of charge to the families.
Each child is like a blade of grass, varied and different, each with their unique needs, those needs are first and foremost to those dedicated to their care”.
The Russell Home Bowling Team was able to join us, at our Bowling Bonanza, and we were impressed with their bowling skills and intense love for the sport!
We were also able to host an ice cream social at their home and they showed use great hospitality and graciousness — we had a great time!

In the words of Camille Gardiner, “The Down Syndrome Foundation of Florida is grateful for the partnership with Dream Big, Inc. The funds that are provided to our organization are used to help facilitate our Community Scholarship Program. This program is designed to open opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome to be included in activities of their preference and choice alongside their typically developing peers. We support individuals in dance, gymnastics, soccer, horseback riding, martial arts and much more. This not only provides our members with a wonderful experience and age appropriate role models but it also gives others in our community a first hand experience with someone with Down syndrome which they may not otherwise have. When our members are involved in something they are passionate about they can showcase their abilities, make friends and breakdown misconceptions about what people with Down syndrome can do. The feedback we have received from the families who participate is that it builds confidence and that it is a positive experience for the coaches, instructors and all of the participants. We hope that by promoting inclusion in this way we will break down barriers to meaningful employment, living opportunities and educational options for our members. We appreciate your support - it is making a difference! A parent shared with us, “We are so grateful that our daughter is able to be apart of the Community Scholarship program. She has made great friends, is becoming stronger, working on balance, and is learning to work on independence while in a group setting. As a parent, it feels so great to watch your child blossom in an inclusion setting (especially hearing as an infant that this would be challenging for her). I feel that our scholarship has given her a wonderful opportunity to show the community that children with Down syndrome are strong, independent and amazing individuals!”
